Call foR Papers

At a time when refugees as well as those migrating for better work and study opportunities or a more democratic life make headline news, thematize presidential debates and EU membership referendums, when national identity is increasingly defined against the free movement of people, the issue of migration could not be more topical as a focus of rigorous intellectual debate. Thus, our conference aims to bring together experts from all disciplines of the humanities and social and political sciences to discuss the phenomenon of migration, in all of its complexity, taking into account both its challenges and potential dangers to migrant and society, and its potential to be positive and enriching. Without any pre-conceived agenda or claim, we invite open-minded scholars with a belief in the fertilizing and liberating power of academic debate from the whole range of the political spectrum.

Thus, we welcome proposals for presentations tackling the issues of migration, diaspora, exile, persecution, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and related issues from various perspectives offered by ethnography, anthropology, social geography, sociology, political science, history, philosophy, as well as literary, media and cultural studies. General presentations, case studies and specific analyses are equally welcome.

The primary aim of the conference is to discuss and exchange methodologies, research models and theoretical knowledge about issues of migration, minority status and border crossing. After the conference, one or more peer reviewed volumes are to be published with a selection of the best papers.

Send your proposals of approximately 200 words in English or German along with a short bio-note of 100 words by March 12, 2017 (deadline prolonged) to migration2017@outlook.com. Notification of acceptance is sent by March 15, 2017.

The participation fee for accepted presenters is 20 EUR or 540 CZK.

HOW TO GET HERE?
By Plane:

Although Liberec does not have its own passenger airport, it is ideally located between two International airports: Prague Václav Havel Airport and Dresden Airport. The one in Prague is the bigger of the two, with many more airlines serving it, but it is worth checking out the other option as well, especially for people planning to arrive from Germany, Spain, Russia and France. The extremely budget-conscious may also try Brno-Tuřany Airport, but it is located rather far from Liberec, and it offers connections to Britain, the  Netherlands and Russia only.

Getting to Liberec from Prague Václav Havel Airport:

Prague has an excellent, cheap, but luxurious bus connection to Liberec, running from 6:30 am (7:00 am at weekends) to 11:00 pm. These buses, however, leave from Černý Most Bus Terminal, which is located rather far from the airport, so expect a 50-60 minute ride by public transport from the airport to the terminal.

The easiest, cheapest and most convenient way to the terminal is to take bus 100 in front of the airport, get off at its terminus (Zličín), and take the underground/subway/metro to Černý Most station. It is impossible to miss it, since there is only one line serving this station (Line B), and one has to travel from one terminus to the other. The basic, 90-minute, transfer ticket of Prague public transport covers these two journeys with ample leverage. It costs 32 CZK (approximately 1.2 EUR, 1.6 USD or 1.1 GBP) and can be bought from the ticket machines at the bus stop in front of the terminal or from designated machines at the airport (near the exits). Be prepared that the machines at the bus stop only accept coins.

The terminus of the underground shares the same building with the bus terminal. After leaving the train, either take the stairs or the elevator down to the level of the terminal and find platform 6. All buses to Liberec leave from here. Although in theory it is possible to buy the tickets directly from the driver, the line is extremely popular and buses are mostly sold out in advance. It is therefore strongly recommended to buy your tickets in advance at the website of the bus company, Regiojet, here: http://jizdenky.regiojet.cz. One can choose English by clicking on the British flag in the upper right corner. A single ticket to Liberec costs 100 CZK (approximately 3.7 EUR, 4 USD or 3.2 GBP). These are express buses that do not stop anywhere on the way, but they have two stops in Liberec. Choose Liberec, Fügnerova-Blažkova when buying the ticket, as this stop is located at the Liberec public transport terminal, in the heart of the city. All local bus and tram lines are accessible here. This stop is the first one served, so once the bus stops in Liberec, get off and collect your luggage. The ride takes one hour and five minutes. Buses with a small “F” next to them in the reservation system offer service on board (hot drinks for free, small snacks and cold drinks available at a low price), free wi-fi, Czech dailies, a toilet, a 230 V standard socket between every two seats and a small personal entertainment system in front of every seat. Buses without the "F" icon offer no servis.

Getting to Liberec from Dresden Airport:

Dresden has excellent train connections to Liberec, with direct express trains running twice a day, and with the possibility to get to the town with only one change in Zittau in-between the expresses.

At the airport, take train S2 (there is no other train serving the station) to the main railway station, Dresden Hauptbanhof. It takes only 21 minutes, and there are trains running every half-hour from 4:47 am to 11:47 pm. A single ticket costs 2 EUR (approximately 54 CZK, 2.1 USD or 1.7 GBP). Once at the main railway station, one can take the direct expresses at 7:09 am or at 3:35 pm, or take some of the regional trains and change at Zittau. The expresses take between 2 hours and 7 minutes and two hours and 49 minutes to get to Liberec, other combinations take between 2 hours and 7 minutes and 3 hours and 44 minutes. A single ticket to Liberec costs 25.4 EUR (approximately 690 CZK, 27 USD or 22 GBP). In Liberec, there is a tram stop just in front of the train station.

By Train:

The railway companies of neighboring and nearby countries offer special discounts to Brno and Prague railway stations. In order to get these, one has to buy international train tickets on-line to Brno or Prague. The amount of these special tickets issued per train is limited, and one has to buy them some time in advance. Tickets bought to other destinations (e.g. Liberec) and/or at the ticket counters can cost several times more. You can find the offers of some railway companies here: Austrian Rail, Danish State Railways (in Danish), German Rail, Hungarian State Railways (in Hungarian), Polish State Railways (in Polish), Romanian Railways (in Romanian), Serbian Railways, Slovak Rail, Slovenian Railways, Swiss Railways.

If the final destination of your International train ticket is Prague, it is best to travel by bus from Černý Most Bus Terminal. In order to get from the main railway station to the terminal, take Line C of the underground/subway/metro in the direction of Letňany, change at Florenc station to Line B, and travel all the way to Černý Most terminus. You can buy the basic 90-minute transfer ticket of Prague public transport for 32 CZK (approximately 1.2 EUR, 1.6 USD or 1.1 GBP) from one of the ticket machines at the train station (they only accept coins) or from a newsvendor’s shop. Do not buy it from anyone else offering tickets: some people are trying to sell bleached out and/or fake tickets to tourists.

Buses without the "F" icon offer no servis.

Those whose tickets end in Brno can buy a train ticket from Brno to Liberec at the website of Czech Railways: https://www.cd.cz/eshop/. (Click on the “en” icon in the upper right corner for English.) A single ticket, if bought in time, costs 269 CZK (approximately 10 EUR, 11 USD or 8.5 GBP). Choose an offer with one change, and do not worry about the trains listed on the e-ticket, the ticket is valid for all trains operated by Czech Railways serving the same route during the whole day the ticket is issued for. (It is not valid, however, for trains operated by Regiojet.) It is recommended to take an express, InterCity or EuroCity train (listed as Ex, IC and EC respectively in the timetable) to Pardubice rather than a fast train (listed as R or Rx), as those are of much higher quality for the same price. Choosing one of these higher quality trains leaving Brno at 38 minutes past every even hour leaves a comfortable 45-50 minutes in Pardubice to change for the fast train to Liberec. This second train is a direct connection that starts in Pardubice and ends in Liberec. The price of the ticket does not include seat reservations, but it is neither compulsory nor necessary. Just make sure to choose a seat that is not reserved. The journey from Brno to Liberec takes approximately five hours and twenty minutes.

Those who arrive from the South and have an International ticket valid to Prague but want to avoid taking the bus from Liberec can also get off in Pardubice and buy a domestic train ticket through the website of Czech Railways. Doing so is valid and often cheaper than buying a direct International ticket to Liberec.

Although it is possible, it is not recommended to travel from Prague to Liberec by train. The journey takes two and a half hours instead of the one-hour journey by bus, and it means one or two changes on the way, combined with a higher price.
